“What has God called you to? Whatever it is, it’s all yours. There’s no winning or losing in this game … there’s only obedience,” Robert Wolgemuth writes in his devotion on identity in the book, God’s Words of Life for Fathers.

~ What ~
Previously published under a somewhat similar title, this two-hundred-twenty-four-page soft-cover book targets fathers as they relate to God in their daily lives. Using mainly the New International Version of the Holy Bible, the verses cover forty-two topics about dads. A black ribbon marker is attached.

After a table of contents, this book contains forty-two subjects related to fatherhood, each one ranging between three to eight pages, ending with a Scripture index. Beginning with a title, several written-out Bible verses are given about the topic, finishing with a one- to two-page devotional. Some of the titles are Anger, Commitment, Decisions, Failure, Forgiveness, Integrity, Obedience, Patience, Prayer, Self-Control, Stress, Wisdom, and Worship.

~Why ~
I appreciate devotionals that have written out Bible verses, and this one focuses on God’s Word more than the added devotions. I like how one topic is covered first by having the verses and then applying them to a dad’s everyday life.

A favorite was the 4-page one on trust with 15 verses written out from Psalms, Proverbs, Daniel, Jeremiah, Nahum, and Romans. Discussing the author witnessing an earthquake, the devotion reminds men to trust only in God, not in worldly things or people.

~ Why Not ~
Those fathers who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not want to get a book that aims to get closer to the Almighty. Others may wish there were more than the forty-two devotions included. I found the devotions are not in depth and often mention the writer’s experiences.

~ Wish ~
With the many Bible verses given, I wish they were in the King James Version as that is my favorite. While there were a couple of prayers written out in the devotions, it would be ideal if more were included.

~ Want ~
If you like devotionals with short Bible verses and segments that are quick to read, this is a viable choice. It would make a thoughtful gift for Father’s Day or as a birthday present.
