Title: God is My Hiding Place
Author: Corrie Ten Boom
“God will heal my broken heart and teach me to love in ways I cannot comprehend,” Corrie Ten Boom reiterates in one of the chapters of her book, God is My Hiding Place: 40 Devotions for Refuge and Strength.
~ What ~
At one-hundred-and-seventy-six pages, this small hardbound is a collection by the famous Dutch woman who survived the Holocaust and encouraged others to seek the Lord for strength. Using mainly the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible, also referenced are the NIV, NKJV, and TLB versions. With a tan attached ribbon marker, the beginning has an ownership page, about the author page, and introduction from the publisher, while the ending includes a special invitation to the eternal plan of salvation.
This book contains 40 Biblical devotions that convey stories of her life that showed her how to increase her relationship with God while strengthing her soul and comforting her heart during tragedies. Each devotional is four pages long and begins with the day, title, and a written-out Bible verse or two followed by several paragraphs relaying her horrific experiences as a prisoner, the people she met during her life, and how the Lord protected her always. The chapters include one-sentence quotes by the author with duplicated photographs and a tender prayer that could be used by the reader.
Some of the titles include Thankfulness, The Prescription for Anxiety, Bring Your Worries to Jesus, The Beauty of His Word, There Is Power in Your Prayers, You Are Not Alone, When Joy Feels Impossible, Never Too Old, The Place of Peace, Following His Lead, Prayers of Intercession, and Protected in His Presence.
Having watched the movie, The Hiding Place, last week, this is a timely book that concentrates on Jesus being our refuge in times of trouble. The book not only has the author’s personal experiences while being in the Nazi prison camps and her memories visiting around the world, but it also includes Bible verses for encouragement, strength, and hope. I felt I was reading a personal diary at times and how the writer struggled daily with life’s unfair challenges that God sustained her throughout the years.
One of my favorites was Day 32 titled His Love Consumes Our Shame and has the Bible verse from Hebrews 4:16 written out. The chapter is about an American woman Corrie met who was in prison for her crimes and felt guilty and unworthy of God’s love. The Bible story of the one sheep being found is explained as the writer shows how Christ is the only answer to rid us of guilt, fear, and shame. The prayer reminds us to release the shame to Jesus and thank Him for what He did on the cross.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus will not appreciate this read, but the simple plan of salvation is given at the end of the book. Since the book is only from Corrie’s viewpoint based on her life, some may prefer longer or deeper devotionals that explain the Bible verse in-depth or only reading the Scriptures as their daily time with God.
~ Wish ~
There is nothing I would change about this book as it is a testimony of how a woman relied on God for her everyday survival in dark times.
~ Want ~
If you or someone you know of are struggling through life, this would be a lovely gift for a woman who needs strength to get through another day by centering on Christ. Since it is considered a devotional, it should be read daily along with the Bible.
Thanks to BethanyHouse and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
