“Night night, Jesus, who loves us so. Who heals us–body, heart, and soul,” the chapter titled Jesus Heals ends in Amy Parker’s children’s book, Night Night Bible Stories.

~ What ~
Numbered at two-hundred-and-eight pages, this hardbound with a padded front cover targets children ages three to seven years old. With no scary scenes, it contains thirty retold stories from the Bible. Beginning with a presentation page and letter to parents, its ending has the author and illustrator’s biography.

With fifteen chapters from the Old Testament and fifteen from the New Testament, each iconic story is four to eight pages long. After a chapter title and Bible reference, the stories are retold, with two-line rhymes added. The end of the chapter has a prayer and a night night two-line saying. Without showing Jesus hanging on the cross, colorful, happy illustrations grace the pages.

~Why ~
Having given our two-year-old grandson the prior books in this series, he will love getting this book for his next birthday. I appreciate how the book covers Jesus dying for our sins and the eternal plan of salvation in a rudimentary prayer. The pictures are positive and engaging to look at for non-readers.

One of my favorite stories was A Donkey Talks, taken from Numbers 22-24 about Balaam being told by a donkey to go see King Balack. The repetitive rhyme is “Lead on, Lord. Show me the way. Help me to see. Help me to obey.” The prayer thanks God for caring and leading the way. “Night night, Balaam, and his donkey too, who saw God’s way and followed Him through” ends the chapter.

~ Why Not ~
Those who do not like books that rewrite Bible stories for children may avoid this read. Others may not approve that the stories are not always complete (i.e. the evil men are thrown in the pit when Daniel is saved by God). Due to complicated three- and four-syllable words, beginner readers may get frustrating reading it.

Attaching a ribbon marker would be helpful.

~ Want ~
If you are looking for a children’s Bible storybook to read that is simplified and contains no scary scenes except for three silhouette crosses, this is a great choice.
