Title: Go to Sleep, Sheep!
Illustrator: Sydney Hanson
Publisher: Tommy Nelson
“Just as Mama says good night,
She hears a quiet call.
‘Maaa,’ the smallest sheepy says,
‘I love you most of all!’” states the near end of the children’s book, Go to Sleep, Sheep!
~ What ~
At twenty pages, this cut-out board book with sparkled words and moon on the front cover targets children ages two to five years old. With no scary scenes, it is a nice story about sheep making excuses as they get ready for bedtime. Full page color illustrations of cute animals cover the pages.
Written in four-lines of rhyme with some complicated wording that covers two open pages, this short tale from Sunshine Farm has four lambs being told by their mother that it is time to head to the Bedtime Barn. They are not ready for settling down, asking instead for five more minutes to play or time to eat a snack, drink water, be read a story, keep the light on, or have a tickle fight. When their mama cuddles with them and they say their prayers, the littlest sheep tells her mother she loves her. In the end, all the barnyard animals are safe and snug as they fall asleep.
Having grandchildren, I like how this book is the type to cuddle up with them when they visit and it is time for bed. Through the rhyming, it offers ways the sheep try to stall the inevitable bedtime routine. I like how one of the sheep has glasses and another wears a bow. The sheep drawings are colorful and easy to understand, including bunnies, chickens, horses, pigs, goats, cows, and a cat.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not like books that mention God may not approve of this book, but He is mentioned only one time toward the ending. Due to the two- and three-syllable wording, it should be read out loud to beginner readers.
~ Wish ~
Since the mother does not respond at all to her young ones’ suggestions, it may promote a child using the same tactics to avoid going to bed.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a bedtime reading book that is calm, this is a good selection, but it may give a young child ideas how to delay going to bed.
