Title: Catch That Chinchilla
Author & Illustrator: Erica Graham
Publisher: Skyrai Publishing
“I am just going to touch him on his chin …,” Erica Graham ends her book, Talking Tales: Catch That Chinchilla.
~ What ~
Part of the Talking Tales series, this forty-six-page paperback targets children ages one to ten years old or beginner readers. With no scary scenes, the fiction contains some complicated wording for beginner readers. Simplistic illustrations cover the pages with white backgrounds and wording.
In this book that concentrates on learning the “ch” in words, it emphasizes and repeats the sound as it tells a story of a pet chinchilla who escapes its cage and has its young owners chase it through a grocery store, bakery, and furniture store. When the children give up their search for the small creature, they return home to explain the loss to their father who notes the animal is fast asleep in its cage.
~ Why ~
I like books that focus on a letter or word group for beginner readers. This is a delightful story that is engaging while educational at the same time. I appreciate how the children are held accountable by wanting to inform their father of the problem they caused. Having the repetition is helpful as is pronouncing the words.
~ Why Not ~
Since the illustrations are rather bland with one or two items on each page and no background to peruse, it may not engage or hold the interest of some older children.
~ Wish ~
Although I loved the story, I wish this book had more visual details.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a charming story about an adventurous chinchilla and children’s quest to find it while learning about the sound of “ch,” this is an excellent selection.
Thanks to the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
