“No matter what happens, Christ lives in your heart. Ahh … what a great gift that you get a fresh start! Now no one and nothing can keep you apart. Wow! Uh-oh. Yes! Ahh,” Dandi Daley Mackall writes in her children’s book, Wow!: The Good News in Four Words.
~ What ~
This thirty-two-page oversized hardbound targets children ages three to six years old who want to know about God and Jesus. The book uses four words of Wow, Uh-oh, Yes, and Ahh to show how God created the world, Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, Jesus was born, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again, and that we can ask Him into our hearts and tell others what He has done for us. There is a note to parents at the beginning and five pages at the end regarding the four words correlated in Scripture. With brightly colored illustrations of mainly people and Jesus, there are no scary scenes.
~ Why ~
I love a book that teaches young ones the eternal plan of salvation. This one told in clever rhyme shows the reader what sin is through Adam and Eve and how Jesus is the way to a new life with Him. The gospel is easy to understand for little ones. I like that there is enough detail in the illustrations to keep a young one’s attention and that the artist depicted Christ on the cross from a view behind Him, so it is not frightening. My favorite part was the added Bible verses at the back that relate to each of the four words as it gives parents and older children the option to look up the passages for more information.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not believe in God may not be interested in this book about Jesus saving us. Due to the three and four syllable wording, it may be hard for beginner readers. Those with visual challenges may find some of the illustrations too busy and complicated, but they are engaging and interesting.
~ Wish ~
I wish pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence, but this issue did not affect my ratings.
~ Want ~
If you want to promote Jesus as our savior in simple terms to a preschooler or first grader through four words of expression, this rhyming book would be a wonderful gift.
Thanks to the Tyndale House Publishing for offering this complimentary book that I am freely evaluating.
