Title: When God Made You
Author: Matthew Paul Turner
Illustrator: David Catrow
“’Cause when God made you, all of heaven was beaming. Over YOU, God was smiling and already dreaming,” Matthew Paul Turner ends his children’s book, When God Made You.
~ What ~
This forty-eight-page hardbound targets children ages three to seven years old who like to read stories about how God made them unique. With no scary scenes, the book should be read out loud to beginner readers based on several three or more syllable words. Full-page illustrations with flashy colors that are engaging and exciting cover all pages.
In this rhyming tale, a little girl with lots of dark curls is reminded that God knew who and what she was going to be when she was born. As the child looks in the mirror at her features, plays at the park, rides her bike, draws on a sidewalk, and creates beautiful, fanciful drawings, she is told how special she is and can be as she becomes God’s dream coming true.
I like how this book is colorful and visually stimulating as each page has bright colors that pop out to the reader. Encouraging young readers to be aware of God and how He made each of them are important to explain to preschoolers to second graders. The rhymes are whimsical and fun to read.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not believe in God may avoid this book. Some children with ADHD or visual issues may have problems understanding the vibrant, colorful, and intricate designs and complicated wording. Others may not be able to comprehend the topic of God and heaven due to their age.
~ Who ~
The author of sixteen books, Turner lives with his wife and children in Tennessee. Catrow, an editorial cartoonist, has illustrated over seventy children’s books and lives in Ohio with his wife.
~ Wish ~
I wish the book reiterated that we were made in God’s image to glorify Him and nothing we can do earns us His grace and love. I question the Biblical aspect of the book portraying God dreams about us.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a children’s book that focuses on being special because God made you, this would be a nice bedtime book that rhymes with fun, colorful illustrations but has Biblical flaws.
