Title: Baa! Oink! Moo! God Made the Animals
Author: Rhonda Gowler Greene
Illustrator: David Walker
“Mama look! All in a bunch! Who makes them squeal and oink and scrunch?” the curious boy asks about the pigs in Rhonda Gowler Greene’s children’s book, Baa! Oink! Moo! God Made the Animals.
~ What ~
This unnumbered twenty-six-page over-sized board book with rounded corners and a padded front cover targets children four to eight years old, especially those who like stories about animals and God. With no scary scenes, the book shows characteristics of animals and the sounds they make, reminding that God made each for a reason. Full page, full colored illustrations cover every page, keeping the reader’s interest.
Written in conversational rhyme, this story is about a little boy asking his mother who made animals based on their sounds or actions. The mother replies consistently that only God can make such unique animals such as sheep, doves, pigs, cows, chicks, dogs, cats, horses, ducks, goats, and rabbits. The ending has the mother tucking the child in bed at night.
~ Why ~
This is a thoughtful book that can be read to young ones, examining the sounds and characteristics of several animals. By pointing out the differences of ears, beaks or mouths, tails, and other features, one can learn not only about the farm animals but that God made them.
~ Why Not ~
Since the book is aimed at four to eight-year-olds, it may be too sophomoric for older children. It does not mention that God made us too.
~ Who ~
A former elementary school teacher, Greene has written over twenty picture books and lives in Michigan with her husband. Walker has illustrated almost fifty books.
~ Wish ~
I wish all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence. It would have been nice to add a prayer at the end of the boy thanking the Creator for making the animals and him too.
~ Want ~
If your child likes a book that contains many animals and the sounds they make, this may be a nice addition to a bookcase.
