Title: 365 Devotions for Finding Rest
Author: Christina Vinson
“If you’re searching for a way to rest – if you’re looking to satisfy the deep, God-given yearning in your soul and to quiet the buzzing in your mind that comes from too much activity and not enough downtime – this devotional is for you,” Christina Vinson pens in the introduction to her book, 365 Devotions for Finding Rest.
~ What ~
At four hundred pages, this hardbound for women that is meant to be read daily throughout a year blends present day with references to God for those seeking soulful rest. Using mainly the New International Version of the Holy Bible, also referenced are the AMP, AMPC, CEV, ESV, KJV, NASB, NKJV, NLT, TLB, The Message, and The Voice. A Scripture index completes the book.
The book is separated into the twelve months of the year so it can be read daily. Each date per page starts with a title and written-out Bible verse, followed by usually three paragraphs that begin with a topic related to rest or relaxation, sometimes linking it to the Bible verse. The page ends with a short one or two sentence prayer.
One example is May 30th titled Delight in Today and references Exodus 15:11 regarding who is like God. The three paragraphs discuss having a bad day and looking for the wonder of the Almighty in unexpected places as He will bless you with glimpses of them. The prayer asks God to open our eyes in the wonder of Him.
I love devotionals that do not have commentary of the writer’s personal experiences and appreciate that this one does not. Instead, there are gentle suggestions of how to rest solely in God’s love, presence, and grace. Samples of the concepts include reminding the reader to stop and see the beauty, unburden your burdens, rest from seeking approval, restore and renew life, be unique, and that relationships matter. Able to read each in under a minute, the devotions are short and to the point.
~ Why Not ~
Some women may not like themed devotions so would pass on this book. Others may prefer longer or deeper devotionals that explain the Bible verse in depth or only reading the Scriptures as their daily reading.
~ Who ~
Freelance writer and editor, Vinson has authored several books and contributes to websites and magazines.
~ Wish ~
With each day’s reading being short and limited, the book would be more useful to me if it included more background and information of the Scripture chosen and other Bible verses related to the topic.
~ Want ~
If you like devotionals that focus on resting in our Savior as you go through your busy days throughout the year, this is a useful and calming reminder of God always being there for us as we abide in him. Due to its limitation, it should be read daily along with the Bible.
