Title: The Lord’s Prayer
Commentator: Rick Warren
Illustrator: Richard Jesse Watson
“God has promised to take care of all my needs, so I will trust him and not worry,” Rick Warren adds in Zonderkidz children’s book, The Lord’s Prayer: Words of Hope and Happiness.
~ What ~
This numbered thirty-two-page board book with rounded corners targets children ages four to eight years old who enjoy the cherished Lord’s Prayer. With three-fourths of the page having a full colored illustration and several words from the famous Bible verses, the other fourth of a page has one to three sentences regarding the Scripture section as well as a short prayer. The end has the complete prayer plus a paragraph from the commentator regarding how we can always talk to God and He will be there for us.
~ Why ~
With this being one of my favorite verses in the Bible, I appreciate how it is divided up in short segments with adjoining thoughts. For example, “For thine is the kingdom” has a beautiful painting of an old tree, children playing, and a rainbow. The sidebar reads: “I am part of God’s family, which will last forever and ever!” with the prayer “I trust in you, God!” at the bottom. I think young ones will enjoy looking at the interesting and detailed pictures.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not believe in Christ or have a personal relationship with Him will probably avoid this book that contains a prayer to God. Some beginner readers may have trouble reading the book by themselves. I felt that the page on temptation may look sinister and frighten little ones.
~ Who ~
Author, pastor, and theologist, Warren is also noted for his large church in California. Living in Washington, illustrator Watson has been designing children’s books for over three decades.
~ Wish ~
It would help if some of the complicated wording were easier to understand for the younger listeners. I wish all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.
~ Want ~
If your child knows the Lord’s Prayer by heart, this would be a nice bedtime book to read daily that hones in on the word’s of Christ.
Thanks to Z Blog Squad for this book that I am freely evaluating.
