“Do you know what God looks like? Do you ever try to imagine what he looks like?” Day three’s devotional starts in the book, Jesus: A 365-Day Devotional.
~ What ~
At three-hundred-eighty-four-pages, this hardbound is for children eight to twelve years old (third to seventh grade) who want to read a daily devotional about Jesus in the Bible. Using the New International Version of the Holy Bible, one to five verses are written out.
Covering both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, this devotional is for children to know and understand how God and Jesus are always with us. Starting in Genesis, the first two-hundred-sixty-eight days relate to most of the Old Testament books while the remaining concentrates on the New Testament. Each day has a title, written out Bible verse or verses, several paragraphs related to the topic in current day terms, and ending with a short two-line prayer.
Having a child start reading their Bible daily is an important concept that should be promoted more often. I like how each page devoted to a couple of verses can be read in less than five minutes for the reader. Usually beginning the page with a question or two, some topics involve zeal, repentance, fear, safe places, the future, encouragement, and the future as well as Christ’s love, grace, and mercy. This book would be helpful to a new Christian adult as well.
~ Why Not ~
Some children (especially the tweens) may not be interested in reading a book about God or Jesus every day. Others may feel the devotionals are not too deep or do not go into detail, but its targeted audience is children, not adults. With not all books of the Bible included but in Biblical order, the Old Testament is heavily referenced.
~ Who ~
The author’s information is not listed in this book or online.
~ Wish ~
I wish all pronouns of God or Jesus were capitalized for reverence. An attached marker ribbon would be helpful.
~ Want ~
If your eight to twelve year old likes devotionals that focus on Jesus being in the entire Bible that is short and to the point, this would be a good gift or special present if they are baptized, recently graduated, or for a birthday.
