“For mountains and deserts, for rivers that run, for the big state of Texas, that’s filled with such fun,” Henry thanks God in God Bless Texas, a children’s book illustrated by Peter Francis.
~ What ~
Part of the A Land That I Love series, this unnumbered sixteen-page board book with rounded corners targets children ages four to eight years old. With no scary scenes, it is a nice story about different places in to visit in Texas. The full-page drawings are colorful and detailed.
Written in rhyme with some complicated wording, the tale is about a bear named Henry and two little chickens that decide to take a trip to the Lone Star State. Getting in his car, their first stop is climbing the four miles to Guadalupe Peak. They also visit Austin, the state’s capitol, a Dallas rodeo, the Alamo, Houston, and Big Bend National Park. Before leaving the state, the bear picks up souvenirs before returning to his cozy den and thanking God for Texas.
Having a two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter, she loves being read a nightly bedtime story, and this one she can understand although it is for children a little older. I like the there are several places in Texas that are visited and what makes them special. It is a fun series for those who live in the state described or are going to visit there.
~ Why Not ~
With over a dozen three- and four-syllable words, it would best be read to beginner readers. Some children may get frustrated not being able to read it but being in rhyme may help. Several of the illustrations and rhymings are duplicated from other books in the series.
~ Who ~
Living and working in the United Kingdom, Francis enjoys sketching and drawing as well as growing vegetables. It is unstated if he is also the author.
~ Wish ~
I am looking forward to seeing other states and their iconic locations depicted.
