“There’s no time to waste – today’s a big day. This bear’s off to see the grand USA!” declares the children’s book, God Bless America, illustrated by Peter Francis.
~ What ~
Part of the A Land That I Love series, this unnumbered sixteen-page board book with two rounded corners targets children ages four to eight years old. With no scary scenes, it is a nice story about different places in to visit in the United States. The full-page drawings are colorful and detailed.
Written in rhyme with some complicated wording, the tale is about a bear named Henry and two little chickens that decide to take a trip around America. Getting in his car, Henry’s first stop is the Statue of Liberty in New York. He and his friends also visit South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore, Florida’s Everglades, the Alamo in Texas, Hollywood, California, and that National Mall in Washington D.C. At each famous location, the bear picks up souvenirs before returning to his cozy den and thanking God for America.
Having a two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter, she loves being read a nightly bedtime story, and this one she can understand although it is for children a little older. I like the there are several places across the States listed and why each is famous.
~ Why Not ~
With over a dozen three- and four-syllable words, it would best be read to beginner readers. Some children may get frustrated not being able to read it but being in rhyme may help. The route taken is rather odd for traveling around the United States.
~ Who ~
Living and working in the United Kingdom, Francis enjoys sketching and drawing as well as growing vegetables. It is unstated if he is also the author.
~ Wish ~
With many states and monuments to choose from, the short book focuses on only six locations, leaving out other important ones. I wish more places were included, but they most likely will be in the following books per state.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a new series about the states of America and their iconic monuments and places, this may be a good choice.
