“In spite of fear, I faced them all. Now bravely I can stand up tall,” Jack declares in Cheryl Colwell’s children’s book, Courageous Jack.
~ What ~
First in the Noble Character-Building series targeted toward preschool to early elementary aged children, this twenty-eight-page paperback is about being courageous while exploring nature. With no scary scenes, it may need to be read out loud to beginner readers due to some complicated wording.
In this short rhyming tale, young Jack has kicked his blue ball and does not know where it went. At first, he wonders if it bounced to the beach, was tossed in the waves, or went under the water. He thinks maybe it floated down a river, went into a cave, or was surrounded by crocodiles. Or perhaps, it was taken by a bird to its nest, thinking it was an egg to hatch. In the end, Jack becomes brave enough to search for the ball, happy he finds it in a safe place.
~ Why ~
This story is fun for children to read as they look at the brightly colored pictures that include details of small animals and insects and search for the blue ball in almost every design. By showing how to be creative in thinking where the ball could have gone, it also shows bravery and stepping out of your comfort zone as you find answers.
~ Why Not ~
Some may not like the rhyming, but it is easy to read out loud if you know the story in advance. Others may not like some of the hard-to-read words for beginners, yet there are not too many of them.
~ Who ~
With this mother-daughter team, author Colwell dedicates this first book in the series to her grandson, Jack. She and her husband are empty-nesters. Her daughter, Harris, creates colorful, detailed illustrations while her two cats demand her attention.
~ Wish ~
I am looking forward to other books in the series to see how the author promotes more character-building concepts that young ones can relate to and understand.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a new series that focuses on imagination, exploring, and learning about the world, this charming one is a good start.
