“And you are even more beautiful inside,” Princess Emma tells her friend in Mona Hodgson’s children’s book, The Princess Twins and the Birthday Party.

~ What ~
Part of the I Can Read series, this thirty-two-page hardbound with illustrations updated from 2012 targets children four to eight years old and beginning Level 1 readers. Containing no scary scenes, its theme involves a pair of young princess sisters having a birthday party. There is one reference to God knowing our hearts.

In this short story, the princess twins, Emma and Abby, wake up excitedly on the day of their birthday and take their time getting dressed for their birthday party later that day. While having breakfast with their parents, the father reminds them that God sees their hearts and knows they are loving and kind. At the birthday party, one of the girls disappears. Emma finds the downcast girl and offers her crown to make the child feel better, telling her she is more beautiful inside.

~ Why ~
This sweet story reminds young ones not only that God knows our hearts but also that beauty lies more inside us than our physical appearances or clothing. I like how the colorful drawings on every page are engaging and follow the story with an easy to read font listed on each page. I appreciate the moral of the story is one of beauty being inside us and not always noticed on the outside.

~ Why Not ~
Those who do not believe in God may be offended the book begins with a Bible verse and mentions the Creator. Others may not like stories about princesses. Some beginner readers may have trouble with some of the three-syllable words, but there are only a few of them.

~ Who ~
The author of almost thirty children’s books and historical fiction, Hodgson is also a speaker who lives in Arizona. No information is provided on the artist.

~ Wish ~
Since God is mentioned once, it would be nice to include a Bible verse again at the end regarding His eternal love.

~ Want ~
If you like a story of a sensitive princess who thinks about others on her birthday, this would be an excellent choice.
