Title: The Princess Twins and the Tea Party
Author: Mona Hodgson
Illustrator: Julie Olson
“I want everything to be perfect,” insists Princess Emma in Mona Hodgson’s children’s book, The Princess Twins and the Tea Party.
~ What ~
Part of the I Can Read Princess Twins series, this thirty-two-page hardbound targets children four to eight years old and beginning Level 1 readers. Containing no scary scenes, its theme involves a pair of young princess sisters giving a tea party. There is one Bible verse at the beginning of the story and a reference to God being perfect.
In this short story, Emma is planning to have a perfect tea party at the castle. She checks with the cook to make sure the cakes have added sugar, refolds the napkins, keeps her puppy outside, and is assured by her twin sister that the name cards look right. When the guests arrive and sit down to have tea, Emma tries to catch her puppy, making a mess of everything. Everyone laughs and enjoys the not-so-perfect party.
~ Why ~
This is an innocuous tale that reminds young ones that nothing is perfect except for God. I like how the colorful drawings on every page are engaging and follow the story with an easy to read font listed on each page. I appreciate the moral of the story is being happy with being imperfect.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not believe in God may be offended the book mentions a Bible verse and states He is perfect. Others may not like stories about princesses. Some beginner readers may have trouble with some of the three-syllable words, but there are only five of them.
~ Who ~
The author of almost thirty children’s books and historical fiction, Hodgson is also a speaker who lives in Arizona.
~ Wish ~
Since a Bible verse about God giving grace to those not proud is at the beginning, it would be nice to include a verse at the ending about caring for or loving others.
~ Want ~
If you like a story of cute little twin princesses planning a perfect tea party that gets interrupted by their pet dog, this is a good choice for a young reader.
