“Preserving traditional family favors, I also add my own special touches by lightening up classic dishes without losing flavor, experimenting with different ingredients, and using new techniques and cooking methods I’ve learned over the years,” Whitney Miller writes in her book, New Southern Table: My Favorite Family Recipes with a Modern Twist.
~ What ~
This two-hundred-and-eighty-eight-page hardbound targets those interested in Southern cooking in today’s households. After an introduction and pantry list, over one-hundred-and-thirty recipes are contained in nine chapters, ending with acknowledgments, author’s biography, and index.
The sections include breakfast, snacks, soups, salads, sandwiches, sides, suppers, dinners, company, desserts, and essentials and enhancers. Each recipe has a paragraph at the top of the page with a list of ingredients in used order in red print, followed by sentence directions. The bottom has serving size, and about three-fourths have color photographs.
Some of the eclectic Southern dishes include Egg-in-a-Tortilla, Southern “Fried” Pecans, Mississippi Bahn Mi, Sweet Corn Grits, Collard Greens-Wrapped Pork Loin, Shrimp and Andouille Gumbo, Southern Hot Pot, and Cracker Jack Panna Cotta.
~ Why ~
If you want to make tasty recipes from the South, this book has a plethora of choices to try. I like how the directions were simple and easy to understand.
~ Why Not ~
Like similar cookbooks, this one does not contain total preparation time, caloric content, or nutritional value that some individuals may want to know. Not having photographs for every meal may bother those that are visual deciders.
~ Who ~
Winner of MasterChef at the age of twenty-two, Miller has been featured around the world for her Southern cuisine cooking. Living in Florida, she has had published recipes, articles in magazines, and a cookbook.
~ Wish ~
Since diet is getting more vital these days, it would be nice to include the nutritional information.
~ Want ~
If you are looking for a cookbook that is all about the South with a updated twist of flavors, this is a good book.
