“Jesus told everyone about God’s love for them. God loves you too! Draw a picture of something you love,” it is written in Zondervan’s children’s book, The Beginner’s Bible: All about Jesus.
Part of the Beginner’s Bible series, this oversized sixteen-page paperback targets young children from four to eight years old who enjoy stories from the Bible and doing activities. Focusing on Jesus and His miracles while on earth, this is a sticker and activity book geared to hands-on interaction. With no scary scenes except for a storm at sea, it briefly mentions Christ’s death and resurrection. This reviewer wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.
With colorful but easy-to-decipher illustrations and line drawings, each page provides a part of Jesus’s life, stating he was born in a manger, grew into a special boy, and became a very special man. His baptism, calling His disciples, first miracle turning water into wine, feeding five thousand people, healing the sick, walking on the water, and playing with children are told. Also discussed is when he told the parable of the prodigal son. The book ends with a game guessing how many people and pets came to hear Jesus teach.
The activities include adding stickers or puzzle pieces, finding the word game, counting and locating objects that are sometimes hidden, traveling through mazes, looking for differences, matching pictures, drawing, and coloring. The middle of the book contains two pages of fifty reusable stickers that are of Jesus, His disciples, puzzle pieces, fish, animals, flowers, and scenes to name a few.
Young boys and girls will enjoy placing stickers on the pictures and doing the activities while learning about the life of Jesus. Although the book does not mention His virgin birth or, most importantly, that His dying on the cross for our sins is the key to eternal salvation, it gives a brief history of Jesus’s life.
Having illustrated the Beginner’s Bible series books for over ten years, illustrator Pulley currently lives in Tennessee.
