“As you grow up, try to think like Jesus. Try to act like Jesus. He will help you every day to become like Jesus. There’s no better way to live. So BELIEVE,” writes Randy Frazee with Laurie Lazzaro Knowlton in his book, Believe Storybook: Think, Act, Be Like Jesus.

This two hundred and fifty-six page oversized hardbound targets four to eight-year-old children who want to learn how to be like Christ. Using the New International Reader’s Version of the Holy Bible, it blends Old and New Testament stories and how they relate to Jesus. This reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

After a dedication and table of contents, the book is divided into three sections, each containing ten chapters devoted to a story from both the Old and New Testaments separated by a “Jump to Jesus” transition and an explanation He is the answer with a key idea and Bible verse. An epilogue is at the end. Adams’s full-color illustrations and designs often cover the complete page with facial details.

With each section concentrating on thinking, acting, or being like Jesus, some random examples included are the Bible, compassion, prayer, spiritual gifts, hope, and humility. Each subject is discussed over eight pages in more detail with Bible verses referenced.

One example is in the second part on Act, Chapter Fourteen, titled Single-Mindedness. The key question is how to keep focused on Jesus. The Old Testament story is about Jehoshaphat praying to God for help. A reminder is noted that God saved this king. The New Testament story is Jesus walking on the water and Peter’s lack of faith. Realizing Christ is the answer, one should believe in He is the priority.

This large book would be ideal for a twenty-minute bedtime ritual or dinner table reading with conversation that promotes Jesus being a vital part in our lives.

Author Frazee is the senior minister at a church in Texas and has written several books including one with his wife. They have four children and one grandchild. Knowlton has authored over thirty-five book and illustrated two. She lives in Ohio with her husband and two daughters. Illustrator Adams has traveled to Europe and worked for several well-known companies. He lives in Canada with his wife and two children.
