“Kids ages 6 and under will enjoy the fun illustrations of Noah helping the elephant onto the ark, Jonah praying inside the fish, and more as they discover The Beginner’s Bible just like millions of children before,” the back jacket book cover states in Zondervan’s children’s collector’s set.
Part of The Beginner’s Bible series, this five hundred and twelve page hardbound targets young children from four to eight years old. The thick cardboard holder contains a book of over ninety well-known stories taken from the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible along with a fold-out jacket that holds one corresponding DVD and two matching audible CDs. With a few scary or violent scenes, it would best be read out loud to non-readers or beginner readers who like to look at pictures due to their limited reading comprehension level. This reviewer wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.
The book presents ninety-four stories that range from one to eleven pages each with a dictionary of over thirty terms at its end. Each story has a title with referenced Bible verses listed. Having colorful but easy-to-decipher illustrations, the cartoon designs show expressive characters on every page; there is ample room under each for a few sentences written on white backgrounds.
The matching animated DVD shows the same pictures as the book. The stories are read out loud with music, but there are no words on the screen shots. Approximately one hundred and twenty minutes long, it is divided into four sections so that one can pick Old or New Testament stories or application and curriculum choices.
The corresponding CDs have stories that are thirty-four seconds to over two minutes long. Entertaining and engaging, the male and female narrators combined with music and complimentary background noises promote visualization of the storyline.
This book and audio/video pack would make an enjoyable, educational gift to teach young ones about the stories of God and the Bible while they read or listen to the stories and watch the DVD.
