This over-sized one hundred and seventy-six page canvas-binded hardbound targets those who enjoy viewing and learning about animals in the wild, especially how a mother and child relate. After a preface by Douglas Kirkland, foreword by Guy Cooper, and introduction, a portfolio of almost one hundred and fifty pages focus on animal families. The end of the book includes an epilogue by Joy Chambers-Grundy, biographies, an index, and acknowledgments.
Concentrating on a mother and child scenario in the wild, the beautiful full-color, one-eighth to full-page photographs grace the pages. Each picture has a corresponding article describing where the photo was taken, the name of the animal, its characteristics, and sometimes birthing to lifespan information.
From baboons, crab-eating macaques, ebony langurs, and great blue herons to koalas, mongooses, oryxes, and wallabies, the family unit is presented in wild natural environments.
One example is the Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) with a two photographs of the mother licking her newborn calf. With the birthing happing while being photographed, the parent immediately started to clean her baby. Pregnancy is seven months while nursing last six months. Found in the Himalaya Mountains, the goat-like mammals have strong hooves for climbing. Males can weigh up to three hundred pounds while females are normally half that size.
This artistically displayed book of close-up images not only makes a nice conversational book on a coffee table, but it also would be an excellent teaching tool for young children as a “show and tell” in a classroom or library setting where young ones can learn about mother and baby animals in the wild.
Doctor Reg Grundy AC OBE is one of “the 50 Most Influential Australians of All Time,” having produced more than one hundred and sixty television programs. Contributor Kirkland is a well-known photographer, and contributor Cooper is an international business executive. Chambers-Grundy is the wife of Grundy and a historical fiction writer.
