“I love bananas. I love them! Yum! Yum! Yum. I love bananas. They’ve got fiber and potassium! Fred Pinsocket repeatedly sings in Peter Apel’s children’s book, Fred Pinsocket Loves Bananas.
This unnumbered sixteen-page board book with rounded corners targets two to six-year-old children who enjoy stories of cosmonaut Fred and his love of bananas. With no scary or violent scenes, it would best be read out loud to beginner readers due to some complicated wording.
In this short story, a little spaceman named Fred Pinsocket is happily singing his favorite song about bananas all day long. One day he flies to earth in his blue and silver rocket. Fred eats the yellow fruit for breakfast and lunch. Not eating them one by one, he eats them by the bunch.
Three illustrations depict the little man singing his favorite song but have no written descriptions of what is happening. One two-page design has Fred at the food store with a cart full of his beloved bananas. Another scene shows his spacecraft overflowing with bananas that they are spilling out its doors. The last one has a round ball of bunches tied to the back of his ship as he flies to outer space.
The colors displayed are bright with plenty of peeled and non-peeled bananas to notice or count. Simplistic in artwork, the drawn items and colors can easily be pointed to and named.
With a free song download available on a website, children can follow along as they look at the pictures. Although some words such as fiber and potassium may be too complex for a two-year-old, the book teaches older readers a healthy aspect of the fruit.
Some adults may find the book repetitive in Fred’s love song to bananas. This makes a nice beginner’s book for young ones to turn the pages and see a big-eyed spaceman eat his favorite food.
Author and illustrator, Apel is also a singer, songwriter, magician, and father living in California. Having this as his first published book, the writer focuses his musical and worded creations on entertaining, teaching, and shining brightness on children’s day as warm-up exercises at gyms and dance studios.
