“Find the landform in your view.
Remember it belongs to you.
Enjoy what each one has to give.
It’s one great world in which we live.”
Catherine Ciocchi ends the story section of her children’s book, This Land is Your Land.

This thirty-two unnumbered page paperback with a thick folding jacket cover targets children ages four to eight years old who enjoy educational information about the earth. With no scary scenes, it may be best read out loud by adults to beginner readers due to some complicated wording.

In this rhyming story promoting the different landforms throughout the world, full-page, full-color illustrations grace the pages, sometimes with inserted maps, states, or land icon drawings.

With landforms everywhere, the reader is taught about the coast, continent, mountain, hill, plateau, canyon, valley, plains, peninsula, volcano, island, and archipelago, describing what they look like as they are surrounded by engaging scenery.

One can learn coastlines shape a continent, three mounds are considered rolling hills, plateaus have flat tops, and peninsulas have three sides covered by water, along with understanding a mesa is a small plateau and the Grand Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world.

The last four pages have more educational tools of learning activities for creative minds that involve information about different types of landforms, the sorting of them, a game of matching landform names with their descriptions as well as map skill questions, and a grid map with five more questions to answer.

What makes this book fun is not only the rhyming explanation of the different landforms, but also the informational data at the back of the book for older readers regarding how weather, erosion, deposition, and structure affect them. Any child will enjoy looking at the colorful pictures with plenty of details while learning about our planet.

Debut children’s book for this author, Ciocchi has a degree in geology and teaches high school physical and earth science. She and her family live in New York. Illustrator Morrison has been designing children’s books for twenty years and lives in Colorado.
