“You faked your death. You’re living under an alias. What kind of cop would I be if I just accepted your claim that you’re not running from the law?” Hunter asks Meagan in Carol J. Post’s novel, Hidden Identity.

Part of the “Love Inspired” Harlequin suspense series, this two hundred and twenty-four-page paperback targets those who enjoy inspirational suspense with romance. With no profanity or graphic sexual content, topics of physical abuse, murder, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. Promoting Christian theology of God always being nearby, the eternal plan of salvation is not discussed in detail.

In this current-day short story based in Cedar Fort, Florida, twenty-four-year-old Meagan Berry has resided only a couple months in the small seaside town. When she rescues a senator from a plane crash in the ocean, she is caught off guard when her photograph is spread nationally on television.

Thinking she had escaped the clutches of an abusive ex-fiancé by faking her death months ago, she knows he will do anything to find her again. Afraid the past has caught up with her when an intruder breaks into her home, she befriends the attentive Police Officer Hunter Kingston but finds him controlling and aloof.

Hunter, whose fiancé was killed in a drunk driving accident four years ago, refuses to fall in love, only to get hurt again. He ardently tries to keep his distance and emotions in check when he tries to protect Meagan as he searches for the real story of Meagan’s arrival in town.

As the two individuals face their issues of trust between themselves and others, Meagan wonders if she should run away again. Through several attacks producing injuries in others, Meagan fears she has to flee.

Although somewhat romantically predictable between Meagan and Hunter, the story shows how one must learn that God can be a Friend at all times while the other needs to stop doubting, thinking everything is based on lies. With twists and turns, Post engages the reader to realize how important trust is in a relationship.
