The Legacy

Title: The Legacy
Authors: Dan Walsh & Gary Smalley

“He was sure Christina wanted nothing more to do with him now. When he closed the door on her that day, he’d closed the door on any chance he’d ever have with her,” Doug theorizes in Dan Walsh and Gary Smalley’s book, The Legacy.

Fourth in the Restoration series, this three hundred and thirty-six page paperback targets those who enjoy contemporary fiction with relational conflicts. With a couple of slang words, the topic of drug and alcohol use along with suggested premarital sex may not be appropriate for immature readers. This reader wishes all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence.

Best-selling author Dan Walsh has won several awards writing numerous books; he lives with his wife in Florida. Author Gary Smalley is well-known for his books and discussions on family relationships. Married over fifty years, he and his wife live in Missouri.

In this continuing story, Jim and Marilyn’s son, Doug, has been living hours away as he attends college studying to be a graphic arts designer. Wanting to be on his own, he begins to experiment in making choices opposite from his parents’ wishes.

Although he does not join his best friend in drinking and doing drugs, he lets his guard down when fellow student, Courtney, catches his eye. As a Christian raised in the church, his soul battles between obeying his parents and spreading his wayward wings.

Meanwhile, Christina, a family friend who has recently become a Christian and is trying to overcome her past, wonders if her friendship with Doug can go further or if he is too preoccupied with making poor life choices.

As Doug’s parents and Christina pray for the prodigal son to return home, each one’s faith is tested on trusting God to work things out for His glory. It is only when Doug’s life hangs in the balance that he realizes which choice to make.

Even though the ending is predictable, this tender story shows how parents learn unconditional love and silence may be best, a girl yearning for companionship finds patience, and a young man understands God is in control. It may be a helpful read for families going through crisis over a rebellious teen or young adult.
