In Philippians 4:13 it states “I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.” In Wayne E. Nance’s The 3-Minute Difference – ALTER Your Health, Money, and Relationships Without Changing Who You Are, this Bible verse comes to mind in dealing with weight issues, money problems and marital discord.

If sixty-seven percent of Americans are overweight, eighty-five percent will retire in debt and over fifty percent are divorced, most Americans statistically have one or more of these problems. After years of research, author, speaker, trainer and survivor of all three areas, Wayne E. Nance has devised a simple test that helps one determine his or her own attitude that can be altered or changed for a better, more productive lifestyle.

This three hundred and ten page paperback has twelve chapters that include his three minute survey, three breakdowns of types of personalities or attitudes, several ten step programs and areas of concern and objections as one considers changing health, diet and / or relationships. Also included are sections on his foundation and website, notes, acknowledgements, index and author biography. The book is targeted to adults who have issues with any or all of the three subjects.

Nance states up front that he does not like personality tests nor being labeled or put in a box, but designs a three minute “circle any of the forty words on a chart” test that determines four “attitude” types of people – tactical, rational, impulsive or mellow (T.R.I. M.). With thirty-two combinations of scoring patterns, one is further separated in to only three groups of boat analogies: barges, tugboats and sailboats. Using the boat term, he then applies the type of person to the three avenues of problem areas: health, money and relationships, explaining how to relate, change and adapt, based on that determined attitude.

By stating quick fixes do not work over long term, Nance promotes ALTERing (acrostic for awareness, learn, tactical plan, execute the plan and re-evaluate) one’s lifestyle by giving tips of making progress in a troubled area, journaling and making either small or large steps to reach the goal. He cautions and details hidden agenda drivers (HADs) that are in each area, what to look for, what to avoid and when to ignore them.

While briefly stating that God should be the first priority, Nance says we must ALTER ourselves based on our given attitude and help ourselves first so we can then help others. For good or bad circumstances, God has His reason why we have a specific personality and attitude. Romans 8:28 says “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

If one is looking for a plan of altering his or her life in changing their weight, finances or marriage, this may be a good source to hone in on better understanding themselves, accepting their responsibility to others and remembering that God has made each of us who and what we are – special, important and indeed different and unique from one another.
